Tuesday, June 8, 1999

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 8:51 a.m., this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Rick Borotsik, Garry Breitkreuz, Murray Calder, Denis Coderre, Odina Desrochers, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Jake Hoeppner, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Ian Murray, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Appearing: From the Department of Natural Resources: The Honourable Ralph E. Goodale, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board.

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: Howard Migie, Director General, Adaptation and Grain Policy Directorate, Policy Branch. From the Canadian Wheat Board: W. Earl Geddes, Program Manager, Market Development, Sales & Market Development Division. From the Rural Secretariat: Lynden Johnson, Executive Director; Stephen Bigras, Manager; Kevin Doyle, Manager.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed the examination of New Generation of Co-ops (See Minutes of Proceedings of Thursday, June 3, 1999, Meeting No. 87).

Hon. Ralph Goodale made an opening statement and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 9:53 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:00 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed the examination of the Mandate, Management and Operation of the Rural Secretariat (See Minutes of Proceedings of Tuesday, March 16, 1999, Meeting No. 76).

Lynden Johnson made an opening statement and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 11:09 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
