Wednesday, December 2, 1998

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:30 p.m., this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Paul Bonwick, Rick Borotsik, Garry Breitkreuz, Murray Calder, Denis Coderre, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Jake Hoeppner, Larry McCormick, Dick Proctor, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

Acting Member present: Réginald Bélair for Denis Paradis.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Appearing: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: The Hon. Lyle Vanclief, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: Frank Claydon, Deputy Minister; Douglas D. Hedley, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy Branch.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and its Order of Reference dated October 27, 1998, the committee resumed the study of the upcoming crisis in farm incomes (See Minutes of the Committee of October 27, 1998, Meeting No. 51).

Hon. Lyle Vanclief made an opening statement and, with Messrs. D. Hedley and F. Claydon, answered questions.

At 5:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
