VACANCY

The Speaker informed the House that a vacancy had occurred in the representation in the House of Commons for the Electoral District of Ottawa-Vanier, in the Province of Ontario, by reason of the resignation of Mr. Jean-Robert Gauthier, effective today, and that, pursuant to paragraph 25(1)(b) of the Parliament of Canada Act, he had addressed earlier today his warrant to the Chief Electoral Officer for the issue of a writ for the election of a member to fill the vacancy.

Introduction of Private Members' Bills

Pursuant to Standing Orders 68(2) and 69(1), on motion of Mr. Ménard (Hochelaga -- Maisonneuve), seconded by Mrs. Tremblay (Rimouski -- Témiscouata), Bill C-290, An Act providing for equal treatment for persons cohabiting in a relationship similar to a conjugal relationship, was introduced, read the first time, ordered to be printed and ordered for a second reading at the next sitting of the House.

Mr. Taylor (The Battlefords -- Meadow Lake), seconded by Mr. Harper (Calgary West), moved, -- That, in the opinion of this House, the government should consider the advisability of improving housing for First Nation's people, and in particular First Nations' elders.
