The egg tempera portrait of Lester Bowles Pearson captures him sitting in a chair in a characteristic pose, with his hands clasped and legs crossed. The Prime Minister quickly dubbed his portrait “The Sloucher,” saying, “it’s orthodox enough to be acceptable, and yet different enough to be interesting.”

The Artist

Hugh Seaforth Mackenzie was born in Toronto and studied at the Ontario College of Art from 1947 to 1950. He pursued his studies at Mount Allison University under Alex Colville. Mackenzie worked as a commercial artist in Toronto for several years before becoming a professor at the Ontario College of Art.
