The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:00 a.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Matthew Kellway, Wladyslaw Lizon, Ben Lobb, Dany Morin, Djaouida Sellah and Joy Smith.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Mike Lake for Mark Strahl and Massimo Pacetti for Hon. Hedy Fry.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Raphaelle Deraspe, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst. House of Commons: Chloé O'Shaughnessy, Legislative Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Hon. Jim Munson, Senator. Canadian Institutes of Health Research: Jane Aubin, Chief Scientific Officer and Vice-President, Research and Knowledge Translation; Nathalie Gendron, Assistant Director. Autism Society Canada: Richard Burelle, Executive Director. Autism Ontario: Margaret Spoelstra, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, June 20, 2012, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill S-206, An Act respecting World Autism Awareness Day.
 

Pursuant to Standing Order 75(1), consideration of the Preamble and Clause 1 was postponed.

The Chair called Clause 2.

 
The Hon. Jim Munson made a statement.
 

Jane Aubin, Richard Burelle and Margaret Spoelstra made statements and, with the Hon. Jim Munson and Nathalie Gendron, answered questions.

 

At 12:02 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:07 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The Committee commenced its clause-by-clause study of the Bill.

 

Clause 2 carried.

 

The Short Title carried.

 

The Preamble carried.

 

The Title carried.

 

ORDERED, — That the Chair report the Bill to the House.

 

At 12:08 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:10 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to the study of Bill S-206, An Act respecting World Autism Awareness Day, the proposed budget in the amount of $2,300 be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to the study of technological innovation, including best practices, in health care in Canada, the proposed budget in the amount of $2,026.80 be adopted to allow the Committee to travel to CAE Healthcare in St. Laurent, Quebec in Fall 2012.

 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Committee make the necessary arrangements and that the necessary funds be allocated from the Committee's hospitality budget for a luncheon in Fall 2012, with representatives of CAE Health.

 

At 12:24 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
