Meeting No. 67

Monday, March 18, 2013

The Standing Committee on International Trade met at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, the Hon. Rob Merrifield, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Ron Cannan, Don Davies, Hon. Wayne Easter, Ed Holder, Gerald Keddy, Hon. Rob Merrifield, Marc-André Morin, Annick Papillon, Jasbir Sandhu, Bev Shipley and Devinder Shory.

Acting Members present: Mike Allen for Russ Hiebert.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Alexandre Gauthier, Analyst.

Witnesses: Embassy of Chile: H.E. Roberto Cristian Ibarra Garcia, Ambassador; Marcos Correa, Deputy Head of Mission; Elena Bornand, First Secretary.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

Wayne Easter moved, — That, as part of its study of a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the European Union, the Standing Committee on International Trade invite the Hon. Ed Fast, P.C., M.P., Minister of International Trade, and Canada’s Chief Trade Negotiator to appear before the Committee on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 or Monday, March 25, 2013, for the purpose of updating the Committee on the progress of the trade negotiations currently underway.

Debate arose thereon.

Gerald Keddy moved, — That the debate be now adjourned.

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 2.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, March 4, 2013, the Committee commenced its study of the benefits for Canada in joining the Pacific Alliance as a full member.

H.E. Roberto Cristian Ibarra Garcia made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:46 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:48 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on International Trade invite the Hon. Ed Fast, P.C., M.P., Minister of International Trade to appear before the Committee, prior to Wednesday, May 29, 2013, to discuss the Main Estimates 2013-14.

At 5:02 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
