EVIDENCE

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

[Recorded by Electronic Apparatus]

  (0850)

[English]

Good morning, honourable members. I see a quorum.
I must inform members that the clerk of the committee can only receive motions for the election of the chair. The clerk cannot receive other types of motions, cannot entertain points of order, nor participate in debate.

[Translation]

Therefore, we can proceed to the election of the chair.
Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the chair must be a member of the government party.

[English]

I am ready to receive motions for the chair.
I move that Mr. Tweed be chair.
    An hon. member: What?
Mr. Brian Storseth: Larry isn't here.
We would know if Larry were here.
It has been moved by Mr. Storseth that Mr. Merv Tweed be elected as the chair of the committee.
    Are there any further motions?
Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?
    (Motion agreed to)
The Clerk: I declare the motion carried and Mr. Merv Tweed the duly elected chair of the committee.
    Some hon. members: Hear, hear!
The Clerk: Before inviting Mr. Tweed to take the chair, if the committee wishes, we will now proceed to the election of the vice-chairs.
Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the first vice-chair must be a member of the official opposition.

[Translation]

I am now ready to receive motions for the election of the first vice-chair.

[English]

I move that Mr. Malcolm Allen be the first vice-chair.

[Translation]

It has been moved by Mr. Valeriote that Malcolm Allen be elected first vice-chair of the committee.
    Are there any further motions?
    (Motion agreed to)
The Clerk: I declare the motion carried and Malcolm Allen duly elected first vice-chair of the committee.
    Some hon. members: Hear, hear!

[English]

Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the second vice-chair must be a member of an opposition party other than the official opposition.
I am now prepared to receive a motion for the second vice-chair.
Unlike my good friend, Mr. Storseth, I think Mr. Valeriote would be an excellent choice.
It has been moved by Mr. Malcolm Allen that Mr. Frank Valeriote be elected as second vice-chair of the committee.
Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?
    (Motion agreed to)
The Clerk: I declare the motion carried and Mr. Frank Valeriote the duly elected second vice-chair of the committee.
    Some hon. members: Hear, hear!
The Clerk: I now invite Mr. Tweed to take the chair.
Seeing there are no other items on the agenda, I am going to adjourn the meeting and advise that there will be a subcommittee meeting on Thursday morning to discuss future business.
I will advise everybody that the Canadian Cattlemen's Association is hosting a barbecue at the East Block today. If you want to meet some of our producers, they will be there, so please feel free.
I am advised we have a Chinese delegation coming in at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, so we will set aside an hour for them and then we'll have an hour after that for the subcommittee.
    The meeting is adjourned.
