The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met by videoconference at 11:01 a.m. this day, in Room 7-52, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, the Hon. Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Ray Boughen, Dona Cadman, Nicole Demers, Luc Desnoyers, Hon. Hedy Fry, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Anita Neville, Tilly O'Neill-Gordon and Michelle Simson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst; Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Human Resources and Skills Development: Barbara Lawless, Director General, Homelessness Partnering Secretariat. Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Gail Mitchell, Director General, Community Infrastructure Branch, Regional Operations Sector; Michael Rice, Senior Policy Advisor, Innovation and Partnerships Directorate. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation: Sharon Matthews, Vice-President, Assisted Housing Sector. National Aboriginal Housing Association: Charles Hill, Executive Director; Jim Lanigan, Treasurer. Nunavut Housing Corporation: Alain Barriault, President.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, March 8, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of violence against Aboriginal women.
 

Barbara Lawless, Gail Mitchell, Sharon Matthews, Charles W. Hill, Jim Lanigan and Alain Barriault, by videoconference from Iqaluit, Nunavut, made statements and, with the other witness, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That in relation to the study of language changes at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the proposed budget in the amount of $6,300, be adopted.

 

Anita Neville moved, — That the Committee recommend that the government conduct a gender audit of all federal funding of sport, including Sport Canada funding programs, funding of infrastructure projects by Infrastructure Canada, as well as contributions to international athletic competitions hosted in Canada, to ensure that funding is being distributed on an equitable basis;

That the conclusions of this audit be made publicly available and tabled in the House of Commons; and

That this motion be reported to the House.

Debate arose thereon.

 

It was agreed, — That the debate be now adjourned.

 

At 1:03 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
