The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 11:12 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Jason Kenney, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Irwin Cotler, Jason Kenney, Wayne Marston, Mario Silva, Kevin Sorenson and Caroline St-Hilaire.

 

Acting Members present: Deepak Obhrai for Ted Menzies and Peter Van Loan for Ted Menzies.

 

Other Members present: Diane Bourgeois and Meili Faille.

 

In attendance: Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development: Marcus Pistor, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As individuals: Tashi Wangdi, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the Americas; Lodi Gyari, Special Envoy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL): Christina Warren, Program Director. Christian Labour Association of Canada: Brian Dijkema, Ontario Solidarity Organizer, CLAC Solidarity; Ian De Waard, Regional Director, CLAC Ottawa.

 
Pursuant to the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, May 10, 2006 and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee, October 24, 2006, the Subcommittee resumed its study on Human Rights in China.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:21 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:25 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, May 10, 2006 and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee, October 24, 2006, the Subcommittee commenced its study on Human Rights in Cuba.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

Caroline St-Hilaire moved, — That, the Subcommittee on International Human Rights requests for a copy of the original preliminary version of the report prepared by Professor Charles Burton, based on Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Letter of Agreement Number 12800 CB of August 1, 2005, on the Assessment of the Canada-China Bilateral Human Rights Dialogue.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 3; NAYS: 2.

 

At 1:28 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
