The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 208, West Block, the Chair, Jason Kenney, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Jason Kenney, Wayne Marston, Ted Menzies, Mario Silva, Kevin Sorenson and Caroline St-Hilaire.

 

Acting Members present: Derek Lee for Hon. Irwin Cotler.

 

In attendance: Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development: Marcus Pistor, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Charles Burton, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, Brock University. Rights and Democracy (International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development): Razmik Panossian, Director, Policy, Programs and Planning. Amnesty International Canada: Alex Neve, Secretary General, English Speaking Section.

 
Pursuant to the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, May 10, 2006 and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee, October 24, 2006, the Subcommittee commenced its study on Human Rights in China.
 

Charles Burton, Razmik Panossian and Alex Neve made statements and answered questions.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

At 12:39 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:42 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That, Jim Abbott, member of Parliament for Kootenay—Columbia be allowed to speak.

 

It was agreed, — That, the Committee take into consideration the documentation presented by the witnesses who appeared before the Subcommittee on Human Rights and International Development of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade in the First Session of the 38th Parliament concerning the study on Cuba.

 

At 1:00 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
