The Standing Committee on Health met at 9:09 a.m. this day, in the Windsor Ballroom, ROYAL MERIDIEN KING EDWARD HOTEL, Toronto, Ontario, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Gilbert Barrette, Carolyn Bennett, Bonnie Brown, Jeannot Castonguay, Rob Merrifield and Svend Robinson.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst.

Witnesses: Canadian Arthritis Network: Edward Keystone, Member and Professor, Department of Medicine, University of Toronto. Canadian Network for Asthma Care: Kenneth R. Chapman, President. Anemia Institute for Research and Education: Durhane Wong-Rieger, President and Chief Executive Officer. Canadian Diabetes Association: Donna Lillie, Vice President, Research and Professional Education; Alexis Mantell, Senior Manager, Strategic Communications. Canadian Treatment Action Council : Louise Binder, Chair. Consumers Association of Canada: Mel Fruitman, President; Joan Sayer, Provincial Liaison to the National Health Council. Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation: Gord Thow, Past President; Josée Chiarot, Director, Medical/Scientific and Community Programs. Alliance of Seniors to Protect Canada's Social Programs: Al Gorlick, Chair. United Steelworkers of America: Rod Bezo, Canadian Coordinator , Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees; Jorge Garcia-Orgales, Staff, Research Department. Osteoporosis Society of Canada: Joyce Gordon, President and Chief Executive Officer; Gail Lemieux, Founding Member , Canadian Osteoporosis Patient Network.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 17, 2003, the Committee resumed its study of Prescription Drugs.

Edward Keystone, Kenneth Chapman, Durhane Wong-Rieger, Donna Lillie and Louise Binder made statements and answered questions.

At 10:18 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:35 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Mel Fruitman, Joan Sayer, Gord Thow, Al Gorlick, Jorge Garcia-Orgales, Joyce Gordon and Gail Lemieux made statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 12:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
