The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 8:34 a.m. this day, in Salon A, Fairmont Newfoundland Hotel, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: R. John Efford, Reed Elley, Loyola Hearn, Bill Matthews, Jean-Yves Roy, Peter Stoffer, Tom Wappel, Bob Wood.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: François Côté, research officer.

Witnesses: From the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture: Hon. Yvonne Jones, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture; Mike Samson, Deputy Minister; Mike Warren, Executive Director, Policy and Planning. From the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly: Jack Harris, Leader of the New Democratic Party; Trevor Taylor, Fisheries Critic, Progressive Conservative Party. From the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union: Earle McCurdy, President. From the Inshore Council of Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union: Bill Broderick, President. From the Memorial University of Newfoundland: Prof. Richard Haedrich, Professor, Department of Biology. From the Fisheries Recovery Action Committee: Fred Winsor, Chair; Dean Bavington, Member. From the Petty Harbour Fishermen’s Cooperative: Tom Best, President. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Atlantic Fisheries Issues (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, May 6, 2003, Meeting No. 32).

Hon. Yvonne Jones made a statement and answered questions.

Jack Harris and Trevor Taylor made statements and answered questions.

Earle McCurdy and Bill Broderick made statements and answered questions.

At 10:42 a.m., Bill Matthews took the Chair.

At 10:52 a.m., Tom Wappel took the Chair.

Prof. Richard Haedrich and Glenn Blackwood made statements and answered questions.

Fred Winsor, Gus Etchegary and Sandy Sandeman made statements and, with Dean Bavington, answered questions.

At 12:40 p.m., Peter Stoffer took the Chair.

At 12:46 p.m., Tom Wappel took the Chair.

Hon. Robert Mercer made a statement and, with Leslie Grattan, answered questions.

Fred Winsor, Dean Bavington, Tom Best and Gus Etchegary answered further questions.

At 1:54 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
