MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 16

Thursday, November 4, 1999

The Standing Committee on Transport met in a televised session at 9:08 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Stan Keyes, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Gérard Asselin, Roy Bailey, Murray Calder, Bill Casey, Joe Comuzzi, Bev Desjarlais, Stan Dromisky, Claude Drouin, Michel Guimond, Ovid Jackson, Stan Keyes, Val Meredith.

Acting Members present: Carolyn Parrish for Joe Fontana; Gurbax Malhi for Charles Hubbard; Andy Shott for Lou Sekora.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: John Christopher; June Dewetering, Researchers.

Witnesses: From the Star Alliance: Rono J. Duta, President, United Airlines; Shelley Longmuir and Jake Brace, Senior Vice-President, United Airlines. From the Oneworld: Donald J. Carty, Chair, President & CEO, American Airlines, Otto Grunow, Managing Director, International Affairs.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on the future of the airline industry in Canada.

Bill Casey moved,--That the Standing Committee on Transport request from Onex Corporation and their associated companies as well as Air Canada, all documents, unedited and unabridged, that were tabled in the Quebec Superior Court for the Airco & Air Canada court case.

Debate arose thereon.

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

By unanimous consent, the Committee waived the 48-hour notice to discuss the following motion.

Joe Comuzzi moved,--That the Standing Committee on Transport request public documents from the Quebec Superior Court pertaining to the Airco & Air Canada court case.

 Carolyn Parrish moved the following amendment,--That the motion be amended by the addition of "a cost not exceeding $100.00".

Debate arose thereon.

The question was put on the amendment and it was agreed to.

The Committee resumed consideration of the main motin, as amended,--That the Standing Committee on Transport request from the Quebec Superior Court public documents pertaining to the Airco & Air Canada court case at a cost not exceeding $100.00.

The debate continued.

The question was put on the main motion, as amended, and it was agreed to.

It was unanimously agreed,--That the Chair be authorized to write to Onex Corporation and Associated companies and the Quebec Superior Court and request documents pertaining to the Airco & Air Canada court case.

It was unanimously agreed,--That the proposed budget of $84,600.00, for the period of October 14, 1999 to March 31, 2000 be adopted and that the Chair be authorized to present the said budget to the Liaison Committee.

Rono J. Dutta made an opening statement and, with Shelley Longmuir and Jake Brace, answered questions.

At 10:32 a.m., by unanimous consent, the sitting was suspended.

At 10:42 a.m., by unanimous consent, the sitting was resumed.

Donald J. Carty made an opening statement and, with Ottow Grunow, answered questions.

At 12:02 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
