The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Hon. Diane Marleau, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Francine Lalonde, Diane Marleau, Bernard Patry, Bob Speller.

Acting Members present: Sarmite Bulte for Fred Mifflin; Paul Forsett for Deepak Obhrai; Richard Marceau for Yves Rocheleau; Bill Blaikie for Svend Robinson; Eleni Bakopanos for Ted McWhinney.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee and Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers.

Appearing: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Pierre Pettigrew, Minister of International Trade.

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Claude Carrière, Director General, Trade Policy Bureau I.

Pursuant to Standing Orders 108(2) and 109, the Committee commenced its consideration of the Government Response to the Committee's First Report on the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).

Hon. Pierre Pettigrew made an opening staement and, with Claude Carrière, answered questions.

At 5:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
