Meeting No. 28

Tuesday, May 2, 2000

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:31 p.m., this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Rick Borotsik, Murray Calder, Odina Desrochers, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Gar Knutson, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Ian Murray, Dick Proctor, Paul Steckle, Rose-Marie Ur.

Other Membesr present: Inky Mark, Roy Bailey.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher; Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Appearing: From the Department of National Defence: The Hon. Arthur Eggleton, Minister of National Defence, Minister responsible for Emergency Preparedness Canada (EPC).

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Ann Marie Sahagian, Executive Director, Emergency Preparedness Canada.

Pursuant to Standing Orders 108(2) and 106(3), the Committee held a meeting on a Study of the Role and responsibilities of the Minister for the Emergency Preparedness and the Federal Policy guidelines under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA).

It was agreed, on motion of Larry McCormick, -- That the Budget relating to the Committee's study and report to the House of a clear and mandatory labelling mechanism for genetically modified organisms, totaling $62, 400.00 be agreed to, and

-- That, the Chair be authorized to submit it to the Liaison Committee.

Hon. Arthur Eggleton made an opening statement and, with Ann Marie Sahagian, answered questions.

At 4:41 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
