Thursday, April 13, 2000

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:07 a.m., this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Murray Calder, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Joe McGuire, Ian Murray, Dick Proctor, Gerry Ritz, Paul Steckle, Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher; Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: Andrew Graham, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services Branch; Gilles Lavoie, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Market and Industry Services Branch; Suzanne Vinet, Acting Director General, International Trade Policy Directorate, Market and Industry Services Branch; Cynthia Currie, Chairperson, National Farm Products Council.

Pursuant to Standing Orders 108(2) and 81(5) (6), and its Order of Reference of Tuesday, February 29, 2000, from the House, the Committee resumed consideration of the Main Estimates, VOTES (Agriculture and Agri-Food 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35), and Part III - Report on Plans and Priorities.Business Lines: Expanding Markets and Sound Department Management.

Andrew Graham and Gilles Lavoie made opening statements and with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 12:39 p.m., the meeting was suspended.

At 1:12 p.m., the sitting resumed and the Committee proceeded to sit in camera to consider its future business.

At 1:55 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
