Meeting No. 63

Thursday, November 26, 1998

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:01 a.m., this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Paul Bonwick, Garry Breitkreuz, Murray Calder, Denis Coderre, John Harvard, Jake Hoeppner, Joe McGuire, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

Acting Member present: Myron Thompson for Howard Hilstrom.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Alliance of Agri-Food Exporters: Martin Parent, Director, Canadian Pork International; Richard Watson, Marketing Director, Canamera Foods. From the Keystone Agricultural Producers: Donald R. Dewar, President; Marcel Hacault, Vice-President and Chairman, Trade Committee. From the National Farmers Union: Cory Ollikka, Vice-President (Alberta); Randall Affleck, Maritimes Coordinator (PEI). From the Western Barley Growers Association: Greg Rockafellow, President; Ed Armstrong, Director.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the committee resumed the "Take Note" Hearings on the Upcoming World Trade Organization (WTO) Negotiations on agriculture -- (See Minutes of the committee of October 22, 1998, Meeting No. 50).

Greg Rockafellow, Donald R. Dewar, Marcel Hacault, Randall Affleck, Richard Watson and Martin Parent made opening statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 10:53 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
