Meeting No. 62

Wednesday, November 25, 1998

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:30 p.m., this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Garry Breitkreuz, Murray Calder, Denis Coderre, John Harvard, Jake Hoeppner, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire and Rose-Marie Ur.

Acting Member present: Charlie Penson for Howard Hilstrom.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses : From the Canadian Cattlemen's Association: Neil Jahnke, Chairman, Foreign Trade Committee; Jim Caldwell, Director, Government Affairs. From the National Farmers Union: Cory Ollikka, Vice-President (Alberta); Randall Affleck, Maritimes Coordinator (PEI). From the Keystone Agricultural Producers: Donald R. Dewar, President; Marcel Hacault, Vice-President and Chairman, Trade Committee.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and its Order of Reference dated October 27, 1998, the committee resumed the study of the upcoming crisis in farm incomes (See Minutes of the Committee of October 27, 1998, Meeting No. 51).

Donald Dewar, Marcel Hacault, Cory Ollikka, Randall Affleck and Neil Jahnke made opening statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:24 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
