The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room 7-52, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, Ed Komarnicki, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Brad Butt, Chris Charlton, Ryan Cleary, Rodger Cuzner, Joe Daniel, Ed Komarnicki, Kellie Leitch, Colin Mayes, Phil McColeman and Devinder Shory.

 

Acting Members present: Ryan Leef for Devinder Shory, Jean Rousseau for François Lapointe and Mike Sullivan for Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Gruescu, Analyst; André Léonard, Analyst. House of Commons: Christine Holke David, Procedural Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Algonquin College: Kent MacDonald, President; Kayla O'Brien, Student, Sheet Metal Worker (Apprenticeship); Steven Church, Student, Automotive Service Technician (Apprenticeship). Algonquin College Students' Association: David Corson, President. La Cité Collégiale: Éric Duquette, Student, Plumbing. Helmets to Hardhats: Gregory Matte, Executive Director. Skills Canada: Shaun Thorson, Chief Executive Officer; Nathan Banke, Journeyman, Automotive Service Technician Program.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, September 27, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of economic opportunities for young apprentices.
 

Kent MacDonald, David Corson and BGen (Retired) Gregory Matte made statements and answered questions.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That, notwithstanding the routine motion adopted on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, the book entitled “Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work” by the author Matthew B. Crawford be distributed to all Committee Members in its original English version.

 

At 12:07 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:14 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Shaun Thorson, Nathan Banke, Éric Duquette, Kayla O'Brien and Steven Church answered questions.

 

At 12:58 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
