The Subcommittee on Committee Budgets of the Liaison Committee met in camera at 1:14 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Dean Allison, Leon Benoit, Hon. Shawn Murphy, Joe Preston, Paul Szabo and Merv C. Tweed.

 

Acting Members present: Gord Brown for David Sweet.

 

Other Members present: Hon. Maxime Bernier, James Bezan, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Claude DeBellefeuille, Ed Fast, Lee Richardson and Bruce Stanton.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Robertson, Senior Director (acting). House of Commons: Karen Thriepland, Coordinator, Logistics Services; Gilles Larocque, Senior Financial Advisor. Standing Committee on International Trade: Jean-Marie David, Clerk of the Committee; Carmen DePape, Clerk of the Committee. Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development: Normand Radford, Clerk of the Committee. Pursuant to Standing Order 107(1), the Subcommittee resumed its study on budget submissions.
 

The Clerk gave a presentation of the financial status of the global envelope for committee activities.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee on the Automotive Industry of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology be granted an operational budget of $18,500 for its study on the automotive industry.

 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on National Defence be granted an operational budget of $47,339 for its study of Arctic sovereignty.

 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on National Defence be granted a travel budget of $173,082 to travel to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories; Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage, Alaska, USA and Winnipeg, Manitoba, for site visits in relation to its study of Arctic sovereignty, from May 3 to 8, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development be granted a travel budget of $92,038 to travel to Fort McMurray, Fort Chipewyan, Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta, for site visits and public hearings in relation to its study of the impact of the oil sands on water basins, from May 10 to 13, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights be granted a travel budget of $80,924 to travel to Vancouver, British Columbia, in relation to its study of the state of organized crime, in April/May, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee International Trade be granted a travel budget of $39,907 to travel to Washington, District of Columbia, in relation to its study of Canada-U.S. relations, from April 26 to 28, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development be granted a travel budget of $4,005 to travel to Maniwaki, Quebec, for informal meetings and site visits with the Kitigan Zibi First Nation, in relation to its study of the socio-economic conditions on reserves and in Aboriginal communities throughout Canada, in the of Spring 2009.

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities be granted a travel budget of $112,849 to travel to Winnipeg, Manitoba; Calgary, Alberta and Vancouver, British Columbia, for public hearings and site visits, in relation to its study on the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada, from April 26 to 30, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities be granted a travel budget of $75,883 to travel to Halifax, Nova Scotia; Moncton, New Brunswick and Montreal, Quebec, for public hearings and site visits, in relation to its study on the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada, from May 10 to 14, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities be granted a travel budget of $7,738 to travel to Calgary, Alberta, to attend the Canadian Social Forum Conference, in relation to its study on the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada, from May 20 to 22, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities be granted a travel budget of $38,269 to travel to Toronto, Ontario, for public hearings and site visits, in relation to its study on the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada, from June 1 to 2, 2009.

At 1:34 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
