The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 11:38 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Gary Ralph Schellenberger, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Charlie Angus, Rod Bruinooge, Dean Del Mastro, Jacques Gourde, Carole Lavallée, Roger Pomerleau, Pablo Rodriguez and Gary Ralph Schellenberger.

Acting Members present: Hon. Lawrence MacAulay for Scott Simms, Hon. John McCallum for Ruby Dhalla and John Weston for Tim Uppal.

Witnesses: Canada Post Corporation: Robert Waite, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Social Responsibility; Elia Anoia, Manager, Retail Products Services Delivery. National Federation of Canadian Italian Business and Professional Associations: Frank Moceri, President; Salvatore Mariani, Immediate Past President. Italian-Canadian Advisory Committee: Pal Di Iulio, Chair; Roberto Perin, Vice-Chair; Joe Papa, Member.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Friday, March 6, 2009, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-302, An Act to recognize the injustice that was done to persons of Italian origin through their “enemy alien” designation and internment during the Second World War, and to provide for restitution and promote education on Italian-Canadian history.

Robert Waite made a statement and, with Elia Anoia, answered questions.

At 12:07 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:11 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Frank Moceri and Pal Di Iulio made statements and, with Salvatore Mariani, Roberto Perin and Joe Papa, answered questions.

At 12:53 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
