The Subcommittee on Solicitation Laws of the Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness met at 5:36 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N Centre Block, the Chair, John Maloney, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Paule Brunelle, Libby Davies and John Maloney.

 

Acting Members present: Mark Warawa for Art Hanger.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Justice: Catherine Latimer, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Criminal Law Policy and Community Justice Branch; Lucie Angers, Senior Counsel; Patrice Corriveau, Senior Policy Analyst, Criminal Law Policy Section; Suzanne Wallace-Capretta, Research Manager, Research and Statistics Division.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Subcommittee commenced its study of Solicitation Laws.
 

Catherine Latimer made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 7:04 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 7:10 p.m., the Subcommittee resumed sitting in camera.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $ 47,592, for the period from January 31 to March 31, 2005, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $ 67,495, for the Subcommittee’s travel to Toronto, Montreal and Halifax from March 14 to 17, 2005, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $ 82,465, for the Subcommittee’s travel to Vancouver, Edmonton and Winnipeg from March 28 to 31, 2005, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $ 8,357, for the Subcommittee’s travel to Winnipeg on April 1, 2005, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That an employee of the Department of Justice be authorized to accompany and assist the Subcommittee during the trips that the Subcommittee plans to take in the coming months to different parts of Canada, provided that this person’s travel costs not be charged to the Subcommittee.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee’s analysts be authorized to put questions to witnesses at the end of the question period normally set aside for the Subcommittee’s members.

 

At 7:30 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
