The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 1:01 p.m. this day, in Room C-110, 1 Wellington Street, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Irwin Cotler, Nina Grewal, Jim Hillyer, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid and David Sweet.

 

Acting Members present: Romeo Saganash for Tyrone Benskin.

 

Other Members present: Hon. Judy Sgro.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Justin Mohammed, Analyst; Erin Shaw, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Foundation for Defense of Democracies: Ali Alfoneh, Senior Fellow; Mark Dubowitz, Executive Director. Freedom House: Mark Lagon, President.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $ 3,500, for the study of Human Rights Situation in Sudan, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $ 12,340, for the study of the Human Rights Situation in Mexico, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That a proposed supplementary budget in the amount of $ 16,300, for the study of the Human Rights Situation in Iran, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That a proposed supplementary budget in the amount of $ 6,000, for the study of the Human Rights Situation in Vietnam, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That a proposed supplementary budget in the amount of $ 10,000, for the study of the Sexual Violence and Persecution of Religious Minorities in the Syrian Conflict, be adopted.

 

At 1:03 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:05 p.m., the sitting resumed in a public and televised session.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee on Thursday, April 10, 2014, the Subcommittee resumed its study of the Human Rights Situation in Iran.
 

Mark Lagon and Ali Alfoneh, by videoconference from Washington, D.C. and Mark Dubotwiz made statements and answered questions.

 

At 2:04 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
