The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Corneliu Chisu, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Joe Daniel, Anne-Marie Day, Jacques Gourde, Claude Gravelle, Chungsen Leung, Jamie Nicholls, Lise St-Denis and John Williamson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Chloé Forget, Analyst; Lucie Lecomte, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Chris Alexander, P.C., M.P., Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.

 

Witnesses: Department of Citizenship and Immigration: Stefanie Beck, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services; Yves Saint-Germain, Director, Language Program Policy, Planning and Accountability; Maia Welbourne, Director General, Strategic Policy and Planning.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, the Committee resumed its study of the Government of Canada programs designed to promote francophone immigration into Canada's official-language minority communities (OLMCs).
 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, the Committee commenced its study of the Citizenship and Immigration Canada's commitment to Part VII of the Official Languages Act.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with Stefanie Beck, Maia Welbourne and Yves Saint-Germain, answered questions.

 

At 4:31 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:33 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

 

At 4:58 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:00 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Jacques Gourde moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Corneliu Chisu, Joe Daniel, Jacques Gourde, Chungsen Leung, John Williamson — 5; NAYS: Anne-Marie Day, Claude Gravelle, Jamie Nicholls, Lise St-Denis — 4.

 

At 5:03 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:04 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That, henceforth, the Committee’s meetings take place on Tuesdays only, for the remainder of the parliamentary session underway; that meetings begin at 3:30 p.m. and be three (3) hours long; that a fifteen (15) minute break occur after one and a half hours; and that the meeting resume for one hour and 15 minutes after the break.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
