The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in camera at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chair, Ed Komarnicki, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Brad Butt, Jean Crowder, Rodger Cuzner, Joe Daniel, Carol Hughes, Ed Komarnicki, Kellie Leitch, Colin Mayes, Phil McColeman, Claude Patry, Manon Perreault and Devinder Shory.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Gruescu, Analyst; André Léonard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada: Isabelle Blain, Vice-President, Research Grants and Scholarships Directorate. Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists (CCTT): Isidore LeBlond, Chief Executive Officer. Let's Talk Science: Bonnie Schmidt, Founder and President.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That in relation to its studies “Fixing the Skills Gap: Addressing Existing Labour Shortages in High Demand Occupations” and “Understanding Labour Shortages: Addressing Barriers to Filling Low-Skilled Jobs”, the proposed budget in the amount of $63,883 for the Committee's travel to St. John's, Newfounland; Sydney, Nova Scotia; Halifax, Nova Scotia and Montreal, Quebec, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Subcommittee on Committee Budgets of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That in relation to its studies of “Fixing the Skills Gap: Addressing Existing Labour Shortages in High Demand Occupations” and “Understanding Labour Shortages: Addressing Barriers to Filling Low-Skilled Jobs”, the proposed budget in the amount of $76,403, for the Committee's travel to Vancouver, British Columbia; Whitehorse, Yukon; Calgary, Alberta; Fort McMurray, Alberta and Estevan, Saskatchewan, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Subcommittee on Committee Budgets of the Liaison Committee.

 

At 3:44 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:45 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, the Committee resumed its studies of “Fixing the Skills Gap: Addressing Existing Labour Shortages in High Demand Occupations” and “Understanding Labour Shortages: Addressing Barriers to Filling Low-Skilled Jobs”.
 
 

Isabelle Blain made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:24 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:34 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Isidore LeBlond and Bonnie Schmidt made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:26 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
