The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Lois Brown, Bob Dechert, Nina Grewal, Sadia Groguhé, Jean-François Larose, Hélène Laverdière, Hon. Dominic LeBlanc, Gary Ralph Schellenberger, Jinny Jogindera Sims, Dave Van Kesteren and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Paul Dewar for Hélène Laverdière.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Charlotte Landry, Research Assistant.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Bonnie Campbell, Professor, Faculty of Political Science and Law, University of Quebec in Montreal. Sandstorm Gold & Sandstorm Metals & Energy Ltd.: Nolan Watson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Founder, Nations Cry. Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Renata Wielgosz, Director, West and Central Africa Relations. Canadian International Development Agency: George Saibel, Regional Director General, West and Central Africa. Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Patricia Malikail, Director General, Africa Bureau.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, the Committee resumed its study on the role of the private sector in achieving Canada's international development interests.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:36 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, the Committee proceeded to a briefing on the situation in Mali.
 

Patricia Malikail made a statement and, with George Saibel, answered questions.

 

At 5:17 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
