The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 8:53 a.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, the Hon. Rob Moore, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Tyrone Benskin, Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet, Gordon Brown, Paul Calandra, Parm Gill, Hon. Rob Moore, Pierre Nantel, Scott Simms and Terence Young.

 

Acting Members present: Mylène Freeman for Andrew Cash, Tilly O'Neill Gordon for Jim Hillyer and Rodney Weston for Scott Armstrong.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Dewing, Analyst; Marion Ménard, Analyst. House of Commons: Evelyn Lukyniuk, Procedural Clerk.

 

Appearing: Hon. James Moore, P.C., M.P., Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

 

Witnesses: Department of Canadian Heritage: Daniel Jean, Deputy Minister; Nicole Bourget, Assistant Deputy Minister, Sport, Major Events and Regions; Denis Racine, Executive Director, Major Events and Celebrations.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, the Committee commenced its study of Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 9:53 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:00 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Daniel Jean, Nicole Bourget and Denis Racine answered questions.

 

At 10:17 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:19 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed operational budget in the amount of $9,500.00 for the Committee’s study of the Bay of Fundy as one of the new seven wonders of the natural world be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the following witnesses in relation to its study of Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017: Helen Davies, Author; Peter Aykroyd, Canadian Centennial Commission; Luci Tremblay, Société du 400e anniversaire de la Ville de Québec; Representatives of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games; His Excellency Justin Brown, High Commissioner for Australia; His Excellency Francisco J. Barrio-Terrazas, Ambassador for Mexico; Keith Neuman, Environics Research Group; Gabriel Sékaly and Peter MacLeod, 150!Canada Conference; and Representatives of the Historica Dominion Institute.

 

At 10:35 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:37 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee devote all of its meetings in November to its study of Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017.

 

At 10:41 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
