The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met in a televised session at 11:49 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Merv Tweed, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Malcolm Allen, Alex Atamanenko, Ruth Ellen Brosseau, Pierre Lemieux, LaVar Payne, Francine Raynault, Blake Richards, Brian Storseth, Merv Tweed, Frank Valeriote and Bob Zimmer.

 

Acting Members present: Earl Dreeshen for Randy Hoback.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst; Khamla Heminthavong, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Gerry Ritz, P.C., M.P., Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board.

 

Witnesses: Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food: Suzanne Vinet, Deputy Minister; Greg Meredith, Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy Branch. Canadian Food Inspection Agency: George Da Pont, President; Paul Mayers, Associate Vice-President, Policy and Programs.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study of Subject-matter of the Supplementary Estimates (A) 2013-14 under AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD.
 

The Minister made a statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

 

At 12:17 p.m., by unanimous consent and pursuant to Standing Order 115(5), it was agreed that the Committee continue to sit.

 

At 12:32 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:04 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, January 31, 2013, the Committee resumed its study of agricultural and agri-food products supply chain (beverage sector).
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

It was agreed, — That the draft report, as amended, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the sections on Agricultural and Agri-Food Products Supply Chain (Red Meat), (Grains and Oilseeds) and (Beverage sector) be combined into one report entitled : "Toward a common goal: Canada's Food Supply Chain - Part 1".

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair, Clerk and analyst be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the report.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair present the report to the House.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee append to its report dissenting and / or supplementary opinions from New Democratic Party / Liberals provided that they are no more than 6 pages in length (font = 12; line spacing = 1.5) and submitted electronically, in both official languages, to the Clerk of the Committee no later than 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, 2013.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 109, the Committee request that the Government table a comprehensive response to the report.

 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Committee, in consultation with the Chair, issue a news release to announce the Committee’s report in relation to the study on Agricultural and Agri-Food Products Supply Chain.

 

At 1:14 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
