Tuesday, February 26, 2013

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:02 a.m. this day, in Room 8-53, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, Merv Tweed, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Malcolm Allen, Alex Atamanenko, Ruth Ellen Brosseau, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, LaVar Payne, Francine Raynault, Brian Storseth, Merv Tweed, Frank Valeriote and Bob Zimmer.

Acting Members present: Earl Dreeshen for Blake Richards.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst ; Khamla Heminthavong, Analyst.

Witnesses: Canola Council of Canada: Jim Everson, Vice-President, Corporate Affairs. As an individual: Stuart Smyth, Research Scientist, Department of Bioresource Policy, Business and Economics, University of Saskatchewan. CropLife Canada: Stephen Yarrow, Vice President, Plant Biotechnology; Dennis Prouse, Vice-President, Government Affairs. Food and Consumer Products of Canada: Susan Abel, Vice President, Safety and Compliance.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of agricultural and agri-food products supply chain (grains and oilseeds).

Jim Everson and Stuart Smyth made statements and answered questions.

At 11:59 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:04 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Stephen Yarrow and Susan Abel made statements and, with Dennis Prouse, answered questions.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to the order of reference of Monday, February 25, 2013, the Committee undertake the study of the Supplementary Estimates (C) 2012-2013, votes 1c, 5c, 20c and 25c under AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD.

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to the order of reference of Monday, February 25, 2013, the Committee undertake the study of the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014, specifically votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 under AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD.

At 1:06 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
