The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met in a televised session at 8:47 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Merv Tweed, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Malcolm Allen, Alex Atamanenko, Ruth Ellen Brosseau, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, LaVar Payne, Francine Raynault, Blake Richards, Merv Tweed, Frank Valeriote and Bob Zimmer.

 

Acting Members present: Rod Bruinooge for Brian Storseth.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Martha Butler, Analyst; Frédéric Forge, Analyst; Khamla Heminthavong, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Association of Regulated Importers: Sukhdeep Bilkhu, Chair; Robert de Valk, Executive Secretary. Canadian Meat Council: James Laws, Executive Director. Retail Council of Canada: Karen Proud, Vice-President, Federal Government Relations. Dairy Farmers of Canada: Ron Versteeg, Vice-President.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, October 23, 2012 and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, October 25, 2012, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill S-11, An Act respecting food commodities, including their inspection, their safety, their labelling and advertising, their import, export and interprovincial trade, the establishment of standards for them, the registration or licensing of persons who perform certain activities related to them, the establishment of standards governing establishments where those activities are performed and the registration of establishments where those activities are performed.
 

James Laws and Karen Proud made statements and answered questions.

 

At 9:41 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:49 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Sukhdeep Bilkhu and Ron Versteeg made statements and with Robert de Valk answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Malcolm Allen, it was agreed, — That in relation to the study of the Bill S-11, Safe Food for Canadians Act, the proposed budget in the amount of $ 5,790.00 be adopted.

 

At 10:45 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
