The Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chair, Greg Kerr, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Eve Adams, Sean Casey, Sylvain Chicoine, Corneliu Chisu, Richard M. Harris, Greg Kerr, Wladyslaw Lizon, Ben Lobb, Irene Mathyssen, Peter Stoffer and Brian Storseth.

 

Acting Members present: Joyce Murray for Sean Casey and Ève Péclet for Manon Perreault.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Martin Auger, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Veterans Ombudsman: Guy Parent, Veterans Ombudsman, Chief Warrant Officer (Retired); Gary Walbourne, Director General, Operations. Department of Veterans Affairs: Keith Hillier, Assistant Deputy Minister, Service Delivery.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of Transformation Initiatives at Veterans Affairs Canada.
 

Guy Parent and Keith Hillier made statements and answered questions.

 
Brian Storseth gave notice of the following motion: That the Committee recognize and commend the recent decision by the Government of Canada, particularly the Ministers of National Defence and Veterans Affairs to not appeal the Federal Court's May 1, 2012 decision regarding the offset of Pension Act disability benefits from the Service Income Security Insurance Plan (SISIP); and that the Committee commend the Government for demonstrating its continued commitment to serving members and veterans by also taking action to harmonize disability benefits at Veterans Affairs to reflect the planned changes to SISIP; and that this be reported to the house.
 

Ben Lobb moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

At 4:55 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:57 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 5:06 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
