Meeting No. 5

The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 11:34 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Chris Warkentin, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Dennis Bevington, Ray Boughen, Rob Clarke, Linda Duncan, Jonathan Genest-Jourdain, LaVar Payne, John Rafferty, Greg Rickford, Kyle Seeback, Chris Warkentin and David Wilks.

Acting Members present: Justin Trudeau for Hon. Carolyn Bennett.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Tonina Simeone, Analyst ; Marlisa Tiedemann, Analyst.

Witnesses: Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Andrew Beynon, Director General, Community Opportunities Branch; Isabelle Dupuis, Acting Director, First Nations Land Management Directorate, Community Opportunities Branch; Kris Johnson, Senior Director, Lands Modernization, Community Opportunities Branch.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing on Land Management Requirements.

Andrew Beynon made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 12:49 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:51 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, the Committee hear from Clément Chartier, President of the Métis National Council from 11:00 a.m. to Noon; That this meeting be followed by a meeting of the Subcommittee on Procedure and Agenda.

It was agreed, — That the Committee hear from Chief Robert Louie of the First Nations Lands Advisory Board on Thursday, October 20, 2011.

It was agreed, — That on Thursday, October 27, 2011, the Committee receive a briefing from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development on Treaty Process.

It was agreed, — That the leaders of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) and of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP) be invited to appear before the Committee on the first week of November.

At 1:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
