The Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities met in camera at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Merv Tweed, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dennis Bevington, Lois Brown, Bonnie Crombie, Sukh Dhaliwal, Roger Gaudet, Brian Jean, Mario Laframboise, Colin Mayes, Blake Richards, Merv Tweed, Hon. Joseph Volpe and Jeff Watson.

 

Associate Members present: Brian Masse.

 

Other Members present: Jim Maloway.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: John Christopher, Analyst; Jean Dupuis, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Transport: Gerard A. McDonald, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Safety and Security Group; Trevor Lehouillier, Head, Defect Investigations, Defect Investigations and Recalls Branch; Louis-Philippe Lussier, Chief, Defect Investigations and Recalls Branch.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the First Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

1. That in relation to the Committee’s study into the recall of vehicles manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation:

That a televised meeting be held on Thursday, March 11, 2010, with officials from Transport Canada including the appropriate Deputy Minister or Assistant Deputy Minister, a representative of the Road Safety Division, and a representative of the Defects Investigation department; and

That a televised meeting be held on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, with representatives of Toyota Motor Corporation including North American President and Chief Operating Officer Mr. Yoshimi Inaba, Canadian President and Chief Executive Officer Mr. YoichiTomihara, Managing Director (Canada) Mr. Steven Beatty, and a representative from manufacturing Mr. Tanguay.

2. That a meeting be held on Thursday, March 18, 2010, on the Supplementary Estimates (C) 2009-10, with the Minister(s) and senior officials from Transport Canada.

3. That the meeting of the Standing Committee on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, be replaced by a meeting of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure to plan future business, and that members of the Committee prepare a list of their priorities by the 18th of March.

 

On motion of Joseph Volpe, it was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

 

At 9:06 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 9:09 a.m., the Committee resumed in a public televised session.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, the Committee commenced its study of the recall of vehicles manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation.
 

Gerard A. McDonald made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:59 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
