The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met by videoconference at 1:04 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Jean Dorion, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid, Mario Silva and David Sweet.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Christine Kostiuk, Analyst; Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Amnesty International: Guadalupe Marengo, Deputy Director, Regional Program (Americas).

 

At 1:05 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:06 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $2,000 for the study of the universal periodic review be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $8,400 for the study of human right in Iran be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $4,350 for the study of human rights in Mexico be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $39,250 for the study of human rights in Venezuela be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $15,400 for the study of human rights in Afghanistan be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $1,600 for the study of Nathalie Morin's situation be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $31,600 for the study of human rights in Belarus be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That, the Chair present all these budgets to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development for it's approval.

 

At 1:11 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:11 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, the Subcommittee resumed its study of human rights in Venezuela.
 

Guadalupe Marengo, by videoconference from London, England, made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 2:00 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
