The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met in camera at 8:49 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Cathy McLeod, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Lois Brown, Dona Cadman, Nicole Demers, Luc Desnoyers, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Cathy McLeod and Michelle Simson.

 

Acting Members present: Sukh Dhaliwal for Hon. Hedy Fry and Robert Oliphant for Hon. Anita Neville.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That three (3) Committee meetings be devoted to the study of Bill C-471, An Act respecting the implementation of the recommendations of the Pay Equity Task Force and amending another Act in consequence, including one meeting devoted to the clause-by-clause study of the Bill.

 

It was agreed, — That on Tuesday, October 19, 2010, and on Thursday, October 21, 2010 or on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, the Committee hear from witnesses in relation to the study of Bill C-471, An Act respecting the implementation of the recommendations of the Pay Equity Task Force and amending another Act in consequence, and that the Committee meeting of Thursday, October 28, 2010, be devoted to the clause-by-clause study of Bill C-471.

 

It was agreed, — That on Thursday, October 21, 2010, or on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, depending on the availability of the witnesses, the Committee meeting be devoted to the study of violence against Aboriginal women in order for the Committee to hear witnesses from Labrador by teleconference.

 

It was agreed, — That, concerning the study of Bill C-471, An Act respecting the implementation of the recommendations of the Pay Equity Task Force and amending another Act in consequence, members of the Committee send to the Clerk their list of suggested witnesses (maximum of three per Party) by Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at 4:00 p.m.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to the study of violence against Aboriginal women, Committee travel be scheduled for mid-January 2011, subject to approval by the House of Commons.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake a study to examine the recent alarming events that suggest that there may be a growing trend of sexually-related violence against young women, including “cyber-bullying”; and that the Committee undertake to discover the causes of this situation; and that the Committee study the effect that new social networking mediums are having on this trend; and that the Committee incorporate this issue in their study of the effects of new technologies on women and girls.

 

It was agreed, — That on Thursday, November 4, 2010, the Committee meeting be devoted to the consideration of the draft report in relation to the study of increasing the participation of women in non-traditional occupations.

 

At 9:23 a.m. the sitting was suspended.

At 9:28 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake as its first priority the study of the cancellation of the mandatory long form census and its impact on women’s equality in Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake as its second priority the study of Women and Canada’s Foreign Policy, including the impact of changes in language in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

 

It was agreed, — That on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, Tuesday, November 16, 2010 and Thursday, November 18, 2010, the Committee meetings be devoted to the study of the cancellation of the mandatory long form census and its impact on women’s equality in Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, the Committee meeting be devoted to the consideration of the draft report in relation to the study of the cancellation of the mandatory long form census and its impact on women’s equality in Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, on Thursday, November 25, 2010 and on Thursday December 2, 2010, the Committee meetings be devoted to the study of women and Canada’s foreign policy, including the impact of changes in language in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

 

It was agreed, — That a meeting be devoted to the consideration of the draft report in relation to the study of women and Canada’s foreign policy, including the impact of changes in language in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee modify its schedule, if needed, to accommodate the appearance of the Minister of Justice, the Minister of Health and the Minister on the Status of Women, who have been invited to appear before the Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake as its third priority the study of the effects of new technologies on women and girls, that at least eight (8) Committee meetings be devoted to hearing witnesses, and that this study be the first priority of the Committee in January 2011.

 

At 9:58 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
