The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met in a videoconference televised session at 8:47 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, David Tilson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Olivia Chow, Nicolas Dufour, Rick Dykstra, Nina Grewal, Robert Oliphant, Devinder Shory, Thierry St-Cyr, David Tilson, Justin Trudeau, Tim Uppal, Alice Wong and Borys Wrzesnewskyj.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Béchard, Analyst; Daphne Keevil Harrold, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Citizenship and Immigration: Rénald Gilbert, Director General, International Region; Jim Versteegh, Immigration Program Manager, Hong Kong (China); Angela Gawel, Deputy Program Manager, Hong Kong, China; Lorie Jane Turner, Unit Supervisor, Economic Unit, Hong Kong, China; Scott Paterson, Unit Supervisor, Family Class, Hong Kong, China. Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada: Simon Coakeley, Executive Director; Hazelyn Ross, Assistant Deputy Chairperson (IAD); Joel Rubinoff, Legal Advisor. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, March 18, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of immigration application process wait times.
 

Jim Versteegh made a statement and, with Rénald Gilbert, also with Angela Gawel, Lorie Jane Turner and Scott Paterson by videoconference from Hong Kong, China, answered questions.

 

At 9:22 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:26 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Simon Coakely made a statement and, with Hazelyn Ross and Joel Rubinoff, answered questions.

 

At 10:05 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:07 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Kerri Froc, Chantal Arsenault and Deanna Okun-Nachoff made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:40 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:42 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed — That the Eighth Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure, which read as follows be adopted:

Your Subcommittee has considered the question of the future business of the Committee and recommended:

That it continue its study on wait times for investor and family class permanent resident applications at its sittings of Tuesday, March 8, 2011 and Thursday, March 10, 2011.

 

At 10:51 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
