The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Mark Eyking, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: André Bellavance, Hon. Wayne Easter, Hon. Mark Eyking, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, Larry Miller, Blake Richards, Bev Shipley, Brian Storseth and Francis Valeriote.

 

Acting Members present: Malcolm Allen for Alex Atamanenko, Claude Guimond for France Bonsant and Bruce Stanton for Blake Richards.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Aïcha Coulibaly; Frédéric Forge.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Cattlemen's Association: Travis Toews; John Masswohl, Government and International Relations.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, March 15, 2010, the Committee commenced its study of the situation of the red meat sector and specific risk materials (SRM).
 

Travis Toews made an opening statement and, with John Masswohl, answered questions.

 

At 3:50 p.m., Larry Miller took the Chair.

 

At 4:50 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:53 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Francis Valeriote moved, — That the Committee recommend to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities that the Government of Canada take such steps, commence such inquires and/or amend such Canadian legislations or regulations as may be required to forthwith prevent the delisting and subsequent closure, for which notice was given by Canadian National, of 53 designated producer car loading sites in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta and the removal of the shunt lines providing service to such sites, for such period of time that the Government of Canada, in its opinion and in consultation with all stakeholders, determine advisable and in the best interest of all concerned.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 11; NAYS: 0.

 

On motion of Wayne Easter, it was agreed, — That the Committee examine the functioning of the Growing Forward program, including the Agri-Stability program, and all other companion programs.

 

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
