The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Alex Atamanenko, André Bellavance, France Bonsant, Hon. Wayne Easter, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, Larry Miller, Blake Richards, Brian Storseth and Francis Valeriote.

 

Acting Members present: Garry Breitkreuz for Bev Shipley and Francis Scarpaleggia for Hon. Mark Eyking.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Aïcha Coulibaly; Frédéric Forge.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Pork Council: Jurgen Preugschas; Jean-Guy Vincent; Stephen Moffett. Canadian Meat Council: James M. Laws. As individuals: Bob Reid; Curtiss Littlejohn.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on March 15, 2010, the Committee commenced its study of the Canadian hog sector.
 

James M. Laws, Curtiss Littlejohn, Bob Reid and Jurgen Preugschas made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the First Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

Your Subcommittee met on Monday, March 15, 2010, to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

On March 15, that the Committee hold a meeting on the crisis in the hog sector;

On March 17, March 24 and March 29, that the Committee consider the draft report for the competitiveness of Canadian agriculture study;

On March 22, that the Committee dedicate the first hour of its meeting to the study of the Supplementary Estimates (C) 2009-2010 with officials from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the second hour on the situation of the red meat sector and specific risk materials (SRM);

On March 31, that the Committee hold a meeting on the Main Estimates 2010-2011 and invite the Minister to appear for two hours;

On April 12 and April 14, that the Committee hold meetings to conduct Committee Business;

On April 19, April 21, April 26 and April 28, that the Committee hold meetings on young farmers and the future of farming;

On May 3, that the Committee hold a meeting on program review.

 

It was agreed, — That the Report be amended as follows:

That the Committee invite the Minister to appear on March 17 in order to study the Supplementary Estimates (C) 2009-2010; that on March 22, the Committee hold a full meeting on the situation of the red meat sector and specific risk materials (SRM); and that the Committee consider the draft report for the study on the competitiveness of Canadian agriculture on March 31, 2010.

 

On motion of André Bellavance, it was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee, as amended, be concurred in.

 

At 5:22 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
