The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Steven Blaney, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude JC D'Amours, Royal Galipeau, Shelly Glover, Yvon Godin, Monique Guay, Pierre Lemieux, Richard Nadeau, Daniel Petit, Pablo Rodriguez and Lise Zarac.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada: Lise Routhier-Boudreau, President; Suzanne Bossé, Director General; Diane Côté, Director, Community and Government Liaison. Quebec Community Groups Network: Robert Donnelly, President; Sylvia Martin-Laforge, Director General.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, the Committee commenced its study on some organizations' current situation with respect to federal funding.
 

Lise Routhier-Boudreau made a statement and, with Suzanne Bossé and Diane Côté, answered questions.

 

Robert Donnelly made a statement and, with Sylvia Martin-Laforge, answered questions.

 

Pablo Rodriguez moved, — That the Committee study, at the earliest opportunity, the impacts of the delays in providing funding to beneficiary organizations, following what was heard at the meeting of June 16, 2009.

 

Shelly Glover moved, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words “impacts of ” with the words “reasons for”.

 

The question was put on the amendment of Shelly Glover and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 6.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 10; NAYS: 0.

 

At 10:35 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:45 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study on the federal government's support for post-secondary institutions and their efforts in promoting bilingualism in Canada.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

It was agreed, — That the draft report, as amended, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the report be entitled: ''5,000 Bilingual Positions to be Filled Every Year: The Role of Postsecondary Institutions in Promoting Canada's Linguistic Duality''.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair, Clerk and analyst be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the report.

 

At 11:03 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
