The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met by videoconference at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Ed Fast, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Joe Comartin, Ed Fast, Hon. Marlene Jennings, Hon. Dominic LeBlanc, Marc Lemay, Serge Ménard, Rob Moore, Brian Murphy, Rick Norlock, Daniel Petit, Brent Rathgeber and Stephen Woodworth.

 

Acting Members present: Jacques Gourde for Daniel Petit.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Robin MacKay, Analyst; Dominique Valiquet, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As individuals: Thérèse McCuaig; Ed Teague. In My Own Voice: Sobaz Benjamin, Program Director; Kevin Brooks, Member; Glynn Johnston, Member; Kenny Loy, Member; Rebecca Moore, Member; Marshall Williams, Member.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Thursday, June 18, 2009, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-36, An Act to amend the Criminal Code.
 

Thérèse McCuaig and Ed Teague made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:43 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:45 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, February 9, 2009, the Committee resumed its study on the state of organized crime.
 

Sobaz Benjamin, Kevin Brooks, Kenny Loy, Rebecca Moore, and Marshall Williams made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:11 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:12 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 111(1), the Committee invite Shirish P. Chotalia, to appear for one hour, on a date to be determined, in relation to her Order-in-Council appointment as Chairperson of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.

 

At 5:26 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
