The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Patricia Davidson, Nicolas Dufour, Kirsty Duncan, Luc Malo, Cathy McLeod, Joyce Murray, Joy Smith, Tim Uppal and Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

 

Acting Members present: Carol Hughes for Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Karin Phillips, Analyst; Marlisa Tiedemann, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions: Linda Silas, President. Canadian Medical Association: Robert Ouellet, President; Owen Adams, Assistant Secretary General, Research, Policy and Ethics Directorate. Canadian Nurses Association: Kaaren Neufeld, President; Lisa Little, Director, Public Policy. Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada: Andrew Padmos, Chief Executive Officer; Danielle Fréchette, Director, Health Policy and Governance Support. Canadian Chiropractic Association: Richard Valade, President; Deborah Kopansky-Giles, Associate Professor, Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Judy Wasylycia-Leis gave notice of the following motion: That the Chair of the Standing Committee on Health be empowered to convene an emergency meeting of the Committee to discuss the outbreak of swine influenza, as soon as a request for such a meeting is received from the Public Health Agency of Canada.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 26, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of Health Human Resources.
 

Linda Silas, Robert Ouellet, Kaaren Newfeld, Andrew Padmos and Richard Valade made opening statements and, with Deborah Kopansky-Giles and Danielle Fréchette, answered questions.

 

On motion of Judy Wasylycia-Leis, it was agreed, — That the Chair of the Standing Committee on Health, following consultations with representatives from each of the recognized parties, convene meetings of the Standing Committee on Health to discuss the outbreak of swine influenza at regular intervals as necessary.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
