The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 11:11 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Lawrence MacAulay, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, Scott Andrews, Raynald Blais, Hon. Gerry Byrne, Blaine Calkins, Randy Kamp, Yvon Lévesque, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Peter Stoffer, Dave Van Kesteren and John Weston.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Jim Abbott for Rodney Weston and Bruce Stanton for Blaine Calkins.

 

Associate Members present: Jack Harris.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Fisheries and Oceans: David Bevan, Assistant Deputy Minister, Fisheries and Aquaculture Management; Guy Beaupré, Director General, International Fisheries Directorate; Sylvie Lapointe, Director, Straddling and Highly Migratory Stocks.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Peter Stoffer, it was agreed, — That the Committee ask Lorraine Ridgeway along with the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to appear before the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans to explain Lorraine Ridgeway’s travel expenses between the years 2006 and 2008.

 

Peter Stoffer moved, — That the Committee ask the Commissioner of the Coast Guard to appear before the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans to give details on the sinking of the spanish trawler Monte Galineiro on February 22, 2009 on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and Labrador.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was negatived.

 

At 11:23 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:25 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 12, 2009, the Committee commenced its study of Amendments to the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization Convention.
 

David Bevan made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 11:50 a.m., Jim Abbott took the Chair.

 

At 11:52 a.m., Lawrence MacAulay took the Chair.

 

At 12:44 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
