The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Lois Brown, Paul Crête, Paul Dewar, Peter Goldring, James Lunney, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Glen Douglas Pearson, Hon. Bob Rae and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Luc Desnoyers for Paul Crête and Jean Dorion for Johanne Deschamps.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst.

 

Delegation: House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia: Junisab Akbar, Member; Fasrudin Arief Budiman, Secretary; Azwar Chesputra, Member; H. Faisal, Member; Abdul Hakim, Member; Bomer Pasaribu, Head of Delegation; Tomy Susanto, Secretary; Taufan Tampubolon, Member. Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia: Andy Laksmana, Third Secretary; Saut Siringoringo, Minister-Counsellor.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of key elements of Canadian foreign policy.
 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development invite both Department of Foreign Affairs officials and Canadian International Development Agency officials to appear on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, for the first hour to give testimony on Canada’s efforts in Sri Lanka.

 

The Committee commenced consideration of a draft report.

 

At 4:36 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:45 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee met with representatives of the delegation from Indonesia.
 

Bomer Pasaribu made a statement and engaged in discussion with Committee members.

 

At 5:20 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:24 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Paul Dewar moved, — That the Committee consider the last motion on the Committee's list of motions today.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Lois Brown moved, — That the Committee do now adjourn.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Paul Dewar, — That the Committee consider the last motion on the Committee's list of motions today.

The debate continued.

 

On motion of Bob Rae, it was agreed, — That the Committee do now adjourn.

 

At 5:57 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
