The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Gary Ralph Schellenberger, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Charlie Angus, Rod Bruinooge, Dean Del Mastro, Shelly Glover, Nina Grewal, Carole Lavallée, Roger Pomerleau, Pablo Rodriguez, Gary Ralph Schellenberger, Scott Simms and Tim Uppal.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua for Ruby Dhalla.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Dewing, Analyst; Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal: Alain Dancyger, Executive Director. Independent Media Arts Alliance: Jennifer Dorner, National Director. Magazines Canada: Jim Everson, Executive Director, Public Affairs. Regroupement québécois de la danse: Lorraine Hébert, Executive Director. Association of Cultural Industries of Newfoundland and Labrador: Amy House, President. Canadian Art Museum Directors' Organization: Robert Labossière, Executive Director. Les Deux Mondes, Theatre Company: Pierre MacDuff, Executive Director. Professional Association of Canadian Theatres: Lucy White, Executive Director.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Dean Del Mastro moved, — That the Committee condemn extremists, financed by the Bloc, for their threats of violence against Quebecers; that the Committee condemn the racism and violence promoted by Pierre Falardeau, Patrick Bourgeois, and other extremists, whom the Bloc has financed; that the House of Commons find a way to ban extremist groups like these, which advocate violence and racism, from receiving funds from the Parliament of Canada.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, February 9, 2009, the Committee resumed its Strategic Review of Arts and Culture Program Expenditures.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:51 p.m., the sitting was suspended.
