The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Alex Atamanenko, André Bellavance, France Bonsant, Hon. Wayne Easter, Hon. Mark Eyking, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, Larry Miller, Blake Richards, Bev Shipley, Brian Storseth and Francis Valeriote.

 

Associate Members present: Malcolm Allen.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst; Mathieu Frigon, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Cattlemen's Association: Dennis Laycraft, Executive Vice-President; John Masswohl, Director , Governmental and International Relations.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 24, 2009, the Committee commenced its study of the Situation of the Red Meat Sector.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Randy Hoback moved, — That the committee travel to Western Canada to meet with representatives of the Canadian Wheat Board and other professionals to investigate the CWB’s substantial losses in commodity trades over the last two years, despite windfall crop prices.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Wayne Easter moved, — That the debate be now adjourned.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
