The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:04 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Steven Blaney, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Hon. Denis Coderre, Yvon Godin, Raymond Gravel, Denis Lebel, Pierre Lemieux, Daniel Petit, Pablo Rodriguez and Brent St. Denis.

 

Acting Members present: Sukh Dhaliwal for Jean-Claude D'Amours and Jean-Yves Roy for Richard Nadeau.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst; Élise Hurtubise-Loranger, Analyst; Julian Walker, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Association canadienne-française de l'Alberta: Denis Perreaux, Director General. Société des Acadiens et Acadiennes du Nouveau-Brunswick: Marie-Pierre Simard, President; Bruno Godin, Executive Director. Association des francophones du Nunavut: Daniel Lamoureux, Assistant Director General . Société franco-manitobaine: Daniel Boucher, President and Executive Director. Société Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin (Société acadienne de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard): Lizanne Thorne, Director General.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Pierre Lemieux, it was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Committee make the necessary arrangements for a lunch at noon on Monday, May 26, 2008, on Parliament Hill with the Finnish delegation headed by the Hon. Pär Stenbäck, former Minister for the Swedish-Finnish Cultural Foundation.

The purpose of the delegation’s visit is to learn about Canadian official languages legislation, at both the federal and provincial levels, and about the education systems for the official language minority communities.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on March 13, 2008, the Committee resumed its study of the Canada-Community Agreements.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:58 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
