The Standing Committee on Finance met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 214, Wellington Building, the Chair, Rob Merrifield, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Paul Crête, Rick Dykstra, Jean-Yves Laforest, Hon. John McCallum, Hon. John McKay, Ted Menzies, Rob Merrifield and Mike Wallace.

 

Acting Members present: Omar Alghabra for Hon. Garth Turner, Daryl Kramp for Dean Del Mastro, Pat Martin for Thomas J. Mulcair and Hon. Judy Sgro for Massimo Pacetti.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: June Dewetering, Principal Analyst; Alexandre Laurin, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Queen's University: Robin Boadway, Associate Director, John Deutsch Institute. University of Toronto: David Duff, Associate Professor, Faculty of Law. University of Sherbrooke: Luc Godbout, Professor of Fiscal Policy, Director, Taxation and Public Finance Chair.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 4, 2008, the Committee resumed its study on the Structure of Canada's Federal Revenue-Raising System.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:04 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:06 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee authorize the printing of 100 additional copies of the report on the pre-budget consultations.

 

Rick Dykstra moved, — That the Standing Committee on Finance review Canada’s coinage system, hearing from businesses, consumers, charities and all other relevant individuals and organizations, with a special emphasis on the one cent coin.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 0.

 

At 5:18 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
