The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 3:55 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Bob Mills, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Nathan Cullen, Hon. John Godfrey, Luc Harvey, Marcel Lussier, David J. McGuinty, Bob Mills, Hon. Geoff Regan, Francis Scarpaleggia, Mark Warawa and Jeff Watson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Tim Williams, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Guy André, M.P., Berthier—Maskinongé. Department of Justice: Daniel Blasioli, Senior Counsel. Department of the Environment: John H. Carey, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Science and Technology Branch; Margaret Kenny, Director General, Chemical Sectors.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, February 13, 2008, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-469, An Act to amend the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (use of phosphorus).
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the Second Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

Your Subcommittee met on June 3, 2008, to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

1. That the Committee commence consideration of the study agreed to on January 30, 2008 regarding the impact of oil-sands development on present and future water supplies, including on water flows and pollution in the Athabasca River and Lake Athabasca and on migratory birds in the Peace-Athabasca Delta on June 16 and 18, 2008;

2. That the meetings consist of information sessions on description, history, technology and future development of the oil-sands; and

3. That the format of the meetings be left at the discretion of the Chair.

 

It was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
