The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 213, Wellington Building, the Chair, Bob Mills, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Nathan Cullen, Hon. John Godfrey, Luc Harvey, Marcel Lussier, David J. McGuinty, Bob Mills, Hon. Geoff Regan, Mark Warawa and Jeff Watson.

 

Acting Members present: Glen Douglas Pearson for Francis Scarpaleggia and Daniel Petit for Maurice Vellacott.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sam Banks, Analyst; Tim Williams, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Sussex Circle Inc.: James R. Mitchell, Founding Partner. Statistics Canada: Karen Wilson, Assistant Chief Statistician, National Accounts and Analytical Studies Field; Robert B. Smith, Director, Environment Accounts and Statistics Division. As an individual: James Meadowcroft, Professor, Institutionalizing Strategic Engagement with Sustainable Development, School of Public Policy, Carleton University.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, February 13, 2008, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-474, An Act to require the development and implementation of a National Sustainable Development Strategy, the reporting of progress against a standard set of environmental indicators and the appointment of an independent Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development accountable to Parliament, and to adopt specific goals with respect to sustainable development in Canada, and to make consequential amendments to another Act.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

On motion of Mark Warawa, it was agreed, — That amendments for Bill C-474 be submitted to the Clerk by 6:00 p.m. on May 7, 2008.

 

At 5:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
