The Standing Committee on International Trade met at 3:41 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Lee Richardson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Guy André, Hon. Navdeep Bains, Ron Cannan, Serge Cardin, Peter Julian, Gerald Keddy, John Maloney, Larry Miller, Joyce Murray and Lee Richardson.

 

Acting Members present: Scott Simms for Sukh Dhaliwal.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Laura Barnett, Analyst; Michael Holden, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Finance: Dean Beyea, Senior Chief, International Trade, Policy Division, International Trade and Finance Branch. Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food: Denis Landreville, Lead Negotiator, Regional Negotiations, Market and Industry Services Branch. Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Cameron MacKay, Director, Regional Trade Policy Division, Americas.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on April 2, 2008, the Committee resumed its study of the ongoing free trade negotiations between Canada and Colombia, with a focus on how environmental impacts and human rights concerns are addressed in trade agreements.
 

Dean Beyea made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:11 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 5:15 p.m., the Committee resumed sitting in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on International Trade be authorized to purchase up to $750 in gifts to be presented to foreign hosts during its trip to Colombia and Panama from May 11 to 17, 2008.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed hospitality budget in the amount of $ 1,500, be adopted in order to allow the Committee to host a lunch for the Vice-President of Colombia on May 8, 2008 (off of the Parliamentary precinct if necessary) and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

At 5:28 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
